If you’re one of those who have heard of lapbooking but lacked confidence in your creativity, crafts skills or both, Home School in the Woods has a collection of great solutions to get you started.
Lap books are fun and practical. They provide youngsters with hours of creative hands-on learning and a meaningful “product” at the end. One of our guys loves to put the books together and spent hours telling us all the cool facts hidden in his latest book. For him, it was a fun way to vent his creativity. For us, it counted as school.
The Hands-On Learning kit we downloaded is the New Testament Activity Pak. You also have the option of ordering the Activity Pak on CD, and we strongly recommend doing so if you have a slow Internet connection. The New Testament collection is beautifully illustrated and includes very detailed instructions. Your lap books will not only show what has been learned, some may even become family keepsakes. The New Testament Activity Pak starts with the birth of Christ and continues through letters of Paul.
Two additional activities, New Testament News and Armor of God round out the collection. New Testament News allows the child to become a cub reporter. The reporter fills in the provided masters and then tapes them together on towel rolls to form a scroll. Armor of God is a poster with cut-outs of each part of the armor. Once completed, you can read the appropriate scripture passage as you “put on” each piece of armor. And you’re encouraged to keep it on in spirit even after you put the poster parts back in the handy pocket provided.
Quibbles & Bits
Amy Pak’s creativity and artistry combine with great curriculum design to make this approach to lapbooking a great way for beginners to get comfy with the process. Paying attention to how Amy’s projects go together can teach you and your child a lot in preparation for the day you hear, “Mom, let’s invent our own lap book!” We’re almost certain you will.
